Holiday on ice: Here are 15 skating rinks in Chicago where you can celebrate the season

West Lawn Park features an outdoor ice skating rink.

The winter months conjure up memories of many things: time with family, warm drinks, fire places and snowball fights. Another activity that has been loved for thousands of years is ice skating.

Believed to be originally from Scandinavian countries, old ice skates were likely crafted of animal bones fastened to boot bottoms, which allowed the wearer to travel across frozen surfaces when walking would have been dangerous. It was not until the 13th and 14th century that animal bones were phased out and wood and metal began to be implemented for the blade of the skates. However, it was many years before ice skating became a competitive sport, when in the 17th century, speed skating debuted in the Netherlands.

Today, we skate for pleasure more than anything else, and this past-time is a great way to enjoy an afternoon with friends or family. So grab your coat and explore these 15 mighty independent ice skating rinks in Chicago.
